





1. Papper Cannot Wrap Embers. (Rithy Panh, 90 min, France/Cambodia, 2006)
Hidup dan pengalaman sekelompok wanita pekerja seks komersial di Kamboja yang penuh keputus-asaan. Di siang hari mereka tinggal di sebuah gedung tua, dan ketika malam tiba mereka menjajakan diri di jalanan, mengumpulkan uang sedikit demi sedikit. Nasib mereka sangat tergantung pada perasaan, pelanggan, dan polisi. Kesewenang-wenangan, kekerasan fisik, narkoba, dan AIDS begitu akrab.
They are doomed in to the inevitable process of their social and physical decay, and to the slow death of their spirits : by day, the young Cambodian girls live in a derelict building, by night they walk the streets, earning a pitifully low amount of money as prostitutes. Their fate depends on the mood and the random acts of their clients, their pimps, and the police. Humiliation, physical violence, drugs and AIDS are the constants around which their lives revolve.
2) Gubug Reot Di Atas Minyak Internasional. (Tedika Puri Amanda dan Kukuh Martha Afni, 16 min, Indonesia, 2008)
Pengelolaan sumber daya alam di suatu area acapkali gagal memberikan nilai tambah bagi kehidupan penduduk di sekitarnya. Desa Wonocolo—di mana sebagian besar warganya hidup sebagai penambang tradisional minyak mentah—terjebak pada soal kemiskinan dan pendidikan. Atas desakan warga Wonocolo, pengelolaan minyak kini di lakukan dan didistribusikan oleh mereka sendiri. Namun soal belum selesai; para penambang belum mendapat perlindungan hukum yang dapat menjamin keberlangsungan hidup mereka di masa depan.
The management of natural resources in an area often failed to give added value for the local villager. Wonocolo village, where most people work as a traditional miner of crud oil, still trapped in a poverty and lack of education. Upon the force of the Wonocolo citizen, now the management of crud oil done and distribute by themselves. But the problem was not ended, the traditional miner haven’t got law cover which can guarantee their life in a future.
3) The Truth be Told; The Cases Against Supinya Klangnarong. (Pimpaka Towira, 110 min, Thailand, 2008)
CPMR -kelompok reformasi media-, bersaing melawan tekanan akuisisi dari Shin Corporation, sebuah perusahaan raksasa yang dimiliki oleh mantan Perdana Menteri Thailanf, Thaksin Shinawatra. Menelusur artikel-artikel mereka yang mempertanyakan kebijakan pemerintah yang menguntungkan perusahaan. Hasilnya adalah berhadapan dengan tuntutan senilai 11 juta dollar dan penjara.
Media Reform (CPMR), in her fight against the 2003 defamation charges from Shin Corporation, the telecommunication giant owned at the time by the family of farmer Thai Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra, following her published article which suggest a conflict of interest due to government’s beneficiary policies for the corporation. As a result, she faced both criminal and civil libel suits, threatening for 400 million Baht (11 million USD) and imprisonment.
4) FAVELA RISING (Matt Mochary & Jeff Zimbalist, 79 min, Brasil & AS, 2005)
Menangkap kehidupan satu orang dan gerakannya, sebuah kota yang terbagi dan favela (sistem pembagian wilayah di Brazil), Anderson Sá. Dihantui peristiwa pembunuhan di lingkup keluarga dan teman-temannya, Anderson seorang mantan pengedar narkoba kini dikenal sebagai tokoh revolusioner sosial dari wilayah yang paling kotor di Rio de Jainero. Melalui musik hip hop, capoeira dan musik jalanan ia mengerahkan komunitasnya melancarkan aksi kontra terhadap berbagai tindak kekerasan bersenjata oleh pasukan pengedar narkoba yang masih remaja, dengan dukungan kepolisian yang korup.
FAVELA RISING documents a man and a movement, a city divided and a favela (Brazilian squatter settlement) united. Haunted by the murders of his family and many of his friends, Anderson Sá is a former drug-trafficker who turns social revolutionary in Rio de Janeiro’s most feared slum. Through hip-hop music, the rhythms of the street, and Afro-Brazilian dance he rallies his community to counteract the violent oppression enforced by teenage drug armies and sustained by corrupt police.

5) 500 YEARS LATER (Owen 'Alik Shahadah, 90 min, Inggris, 2006)
Tindak kriminal, narkoba HIV/AIDS, rendahnya tingkat pendidikan, rendah diri, tingkat pengharapan rendah, kemiskinan, korupsi, rendahnya tingkat kesehatan, dan penyakit menular yang tidak ditanggulangi dengan baik di lingkungan masyarakat Afrika secara global, tidak mengalami perubahan yang berarti. Mengapa? 500 tahun setelah peristiwa perbudakan dan konsekuensi panjang dari kolonialisme, bangsa-bangsa Afrika masih berjuang untuk kemerdekaan dasar mereka. Dikerjakan di lima benua, film 500 Years Later mengamati kekerasan kolektif yang mencerabut orang-orang Afrika dari kebudayaan dan tanah mereka. 6) MY CULTURAL DIVIDE (Faisal Lutchmedial, 60 min, Kanada, 2006)
My Cultural Divide telah meneriakkan pertanyaan-pertanyaannya dengan lantang sejak adegan pembuka. Pertanyaan dengan logika aktivisme politik garis keras: tentang bagaimana mungkin etika konsumsi bisa membawa kebaikan disisi para pekerja di belakang mesin-mesin pabrik. Berkat ikatan kekerabatan yang dimilikinya, sutradara Faisal Lutchmedial mengunjungi beberapa pabrik terburuk di Bangladesh, berbagi cerita dengan para pekerja tentang kondisi pekerjaan dan kehidupan mereka sehari-hari. Bersama-sama dengan ibunya yang sedang sakit, Lutchmedial mengajak penonton dalam perjalanan pribadinya: membangun jembatan antara budaya asalinya di Bangladesh dan kehidupan yang ia jalani selama ini di Kanada.
Starting from the opening scene My Cultural Divide questions the logic of the hardcore political activist, and wonders aloud whether ethical consuming actually does anything good for the workers behind the machines. Because of family connections Lutchmedial makes his way into some of the worst factories in Bangladesh, and talks frankly with the workers inside about their job and living conditions. Sometimes contradicting western activists, the labour leaders he speaks to soon make Lutchmedial question his own long-standing beliefs on child labour and personal responsibility.

7) Bermain Diantara Gajah-Gajah / Playing Between Elephants. (Aryo Danusiri, 89 min, Indonesia, 2007)
Dalam pepatah Indonesia, dikatakan ketika gajah-gajah bertempur, selalu pelanduk di tengah-nya jadi korban. Tapi dalam film ini, sang pelanduk tidaklah mati, justru ia berhasil bermain diantaranya dan meraih tujuannya. Film ini merupakan sebuah catatan dari situasi post-tsunami dan Aceh pasca konflik, dimana seorang kepala kampung di Aceh memimpin masyarakatnya melalui naik turun proses rekonstruksi and rehabilitasi yang terjadi; bagaimana orang Aceh belajar untuk dapat menghadapi gesekan dunia global dan lokal.
There is an Indonesian saying that when the elephants are locked in a fight, the mousedeer would die in the middle. But in this film, the mousedeer does not die – instead, it manages to play between them and get what it wants. This film documents a post-tsunami and post-conflict Aceh, where an Acehnese village chief leads his people through the ups and downs of the ongoing reconstruction and rehabilitation process, and how the Acehnese people learn to deal with the friction between the global and local realms.
8) The Year of Living Vicariously ( Amir Muhammad, 63 min, 2005)
Sutradara Malaysia Amir Muhammad diundang untuk membuat film tentang pembuatan GIE (Riri Riza, 2004). Yang ia hasilkan ternyata bukan dokumenter di balik layar (behind the scene) yang lazim kita lihat. Film ini adalah esai Amir berdasarkan curhat kaum muda tentang Indonesia. Politiknya, citra buruknya, legenda-legendanya dan banyak dalam masa represif Orde Baru yang jadi kenangan mereka.
This split-screen documentary by a Malaysian director chronicles the shooting of the Indonesian film Gie (2005) in the middle of 2004, which is also when the country is undergoing its first direct presidential elections. Opinions from the cast, crew and extras of the film are sought on politics, filmmaking and the national myths of the past and present
9) The Convert (Panu Aree dan Kong Rithdee, 83 min, Thailand, 2008)
Seperti halnya orang Thailand, June adalah penganut agama Budha. Dia tinggal di Bangkok dan membuat toko bahu bekas dan bekerja di sebuah majalah sebagai editor. Perubahan besar terjadi ketika dia memutuskan menikah dengan Ake, penganut muslim taat yang berasal dari propinsi bagian selatan Satul. Setelah mengunjungi kota kelahirannya, June memutuskan untuk menjadi seorang muslim berkerudung. Kemudian dia berhenti dari pekerjaannya di Bangkok dan pindah ke sebuah pulau di bagian selatan Thailand untuk memulai hidup baru.
Like most Thais, June is Buddhist. She runs a small second-hand clothes shop and works for a magazine in Bangkok. Everything changes when she decides to marry Ake, a devout Muslim man from the southern province of Satul. After visiting his hometown for a few days. June turns Muslim, quits her job, leaves her family, and the couple moves to south Thailand to embark on a new life where she diligently learns to pray, fast, follow the Prophet's teachings, and above all, believe in a singular God. This is an intimate feature documentary about a young woman’s courageous transition from one faith to another, from the metropolis of Bangkok to the Islamic South, from the old life of certainty to a new one that is not entirely without disappointment.

MultipleCity adalah sebuah proyek yang mempertemukan seniman dari beberapa negara dan meminta mereka untuk bereaksi secara kreatif terhadap Panama City. Setiap seniman diundang untuk membuat karya di jalan. Syarat utamanya adalah karya-karya itu harus merespon aspek-aspek fisik, sosial dan kultural kota ini. Seniman-seniman juga diminta secara aktif berhubungan dengan kota dan pergulatannya dengan beragam godaan dan masalah yang dihadapinya; dan memastikan bahwa karya (tanpa perlu bersifat interaktif) dan proses penciptaannya terlibat dengan komunitas dan sebentuk dampak terhadapnya. MultipleCity adalah peristiwa seni terpenting sepanjang sejarah Panama.
MultipleCity 2003 was a project that gathered artists from several countries and asked them to react creatively to Panama city. Each artist was invited to create a work in the streets that would be of the streets. The key requirement was that the artworks had to respond to some physical, social and cultural aspect of the city. The artists were also asked to actively relate to the city and struggle with its myriad seductions and pressing problems; and moreover to ensure that both the process of creation and final works (without necessarily being interactive) would involve their host communities and have some sort of impact upon them.
MultipleCity is the most important international artistic event in the entire history of Panama. Featured artists included: Artway of thinking (Italy), Brooke Alfaro (Panama), Francis Alÿs (Belgium/Mexico), Ghada Amer (Egypt,) Gustavo Araujo (Panama), Gustavo Artigas (Mexico), Yoan Capote (Cuba), Cildo Meireles (Brazil), Juan Andrés Milanés (Cuba), Jesús Palomino (Spain), Humberto Vélez (Panama), Gu Xiong (China/Canada). A DVD is included with the book. This catalogue, published almost a year after the event, portrays much more than the event itself. It includes essays on the complex dynamics of Panama City and its pressing urban problems – which has relevance and resonance for other poor developing countries that face rapid urbanization.
