Lashita Situmorang | Redvolution, save the butterflies!!!

Lashita Situmorang | Redvolution, save the butterflies!!!

For the last four months Lashita has been working with sex workers and their families in the ‘red light’ district of Yogyakarta on an arts project called Red District Project. Through extensive research Lashita became aware of just how little access these women, and by extension their children, had to the political, social, and cultural life of the city. Their children are bullied at school and find it difficult to find work outside the confines of the red light district. They are considered second-class citizens and tolerated rather than understood.

Lashita’s work to date has been to conduct workshops with these women and their families, providing them with the same opportunities to explore their creativity as the rest of the community. For the Yogyakarta gathering Lashita will install 1,001 red butterflies (the Indonesian word for prostitute is night butterfly) at the entrance of the red light district which will then be moved to a gallery space as a symbolic gesture that takes these women outside of their world and into the mainstream.

Born in 1977 in Samarinda, East Kalimantan, Lashita Situmorang studied ceramics and fine art at the Indoensian Insitute of Art, Yogyakarta. Lashita began exhibiting her work in 1998 and is concerned primarily with issues surrounding sexual politics in Indonesia. Her work spans performance, ceramics, painting and installation. Her most recent project has been the foundation of the Red District Project in early 2009.
