About...
The Agency for Collective Action (pvi collective and Panther)
Two highly respected performance companies whose work shares many interests, pre occupations and concerns. The project aims to investigate through performance and public intervention ways in which we can activate disparate groups of people to undertake a shared action.
‘‘This is action 1’ was the first experiment by the two groups in the form of a lecture performance which prompted an audience of 85 people to collectively commit to undertaking a series of public acts in response to a list of 30 provocations displayed as video projected text on screen. the intention of this piece was to investigate how individual interests can inform collective events via a process where we empower our audiences to move quickly from agreeing to something ‘in principle’ to then acting on it by participating in a simple shared gesture that resonates momentarily in a public site.

pvi manifesto:
we know:
there is no place we cannot make work
there is no issue we cannot tackle
there is no limit to the form a work can take
we will:
stretch performance to the edges of meaning.
subvert and shift the capabilities of technology.
destabilise familiar conventions.
strengthen our collusion circle.
use humour as a tactical device.
apply rigorous research methodologies.
engage the public through infiltration, intervention and appropriation.
risk, adapt, interrogate, respond, innovate.
develop a centre of excellence for interdisciplinary arts.
adopt the same rigor in our business practice as we do to our arts practice.
we value:
a collective auteurship.
pvi’s collaborative process.
ethical practice.
our place in the global interdisciplinary arts network.
pvi collective
founded in 1998, as an independent artists group and based in perth, w.a., pvi collective create tactical media artworks that seek out radical, darkly humorous solutions for living in an unstable twenty first century. incorporating elements of performance, visual art and intervention, works are often highly participatory, physically demanding, site responsive and politically charged.
our vision is to make ground breaking new forms of interdisciplinary performance and tactical media and to be recognised internationally as australia’s experimental vanguard of interdisciplinary arts.
led by kelli mccluskey, steve bull & ofa fotu, core and associate members have backgrounds in visual art, film theory, sound art, new media, performance, psychology and live art. each contribute their diverse skills towards creating artworks for galleries, public sites and alternative spaces.
the group have toured extensively throughout australia with critically acclaimed tactical media performance tts: australia and internationally with their site-specific panopticon & reform bodies of work including taiwan, singapore & germany.
in 2006 the group represented wa as part of the south project’s international arts gathering in santiago, chile and were selected to exhibit in the prestigious primavera at the mca sydney; in 2008 pvi were key-note speakers at next wave festival and featured video diptych resist as part of the human rights arts festival in melbourne. pvi’s work is part of the national curriculum for performance studies in universities across australia and the company are featured in a new book entitled harmonic tremours: aesthetic interventions in the public sphere due for australian release in mid 09. pvi celebrated their ten year anniversary in 2008 by curating & co-producing a national symposium on hybrid practice and launching their initiative, cia studios [centre for interdisciplinary arts] which provides residency & professional development opportunities to local, national and international practitioners whose work sits on the edges of traditional artform genres. in 2009 pvi will present work in indonesia, leipzig & perth and 2010 will see pvi commissioned to make a new work for the sydney biennale.
