About South Forums & Workshops

Brook Andrew is a Melbourne based artist who works with neon, installation, photo-media, mixed-media, performance and video. Andrew challenges cultural and historical perception, using text and image to comment on local and global issues regarding race, consumerism and history. His most recent mixed-media work draw on Prussian naturalist Blandowski, who’s album of etchings (sourced from The Haddon Library, Cambridge, UK) of Australia from the 1850’s portray a wild and romantic Australia. Andrew is currently planning a solo exhibition at AAMU, Utrecht, working with international museum collections of Aboriginal shields with installation. Andrew’s work often dives into the political and social, not only challenging historical and personal conventions, but also allows for other options in regards to the ‘gaze’ and the consumer implicit activity in global issues. These themes inspire Andrew to travel locally and internationally, actively visiting museum collections and local communities to research and make new work. Blakatak: Like a Chocatak convened by Andrew, was a forum organised at the Museum of Contemporary Art, Sydney, creating rigorous debate surrounding Aboriginal art in a contemporary context.
