Wellington based artist Maddie Leach has developed an installation and site-specific practice that variously combines objects, images, sound and video projections. Leach’s recent installations have employed the idea of performativity as an integral component of the gallery visitor’s relationship to art work. She is also interested in allowing the process involved in creating art works to be of equal focus to the finished piece. In revealing the ‘work of the work’ Leach has presented projects that circumvent commercial elements of the art world by integrating barter and trading systems into the way her work is shown, and how it is traded or sold at the commencement of the exhibition. It is a strategy that redirects attention on to the material itself and considers the ideas of transaction, value and usefulness.   Maddie Leach has a Master of Fine Arts degree in Sculpture from the University of Canterbury. Exhibitions include High Tide: new currents in art from Australia and New Zealand, Warsaw & Vilnius 2006; Linked: connectivity and exchange, Govett-Brewster Art Gallery 2006; Telecom Prospect 2004, City Gallery Wellington, Take Me Down To Your Dance Floor, Dunedin Public Art Gallery 2004, Gallery Six: The Ice Rink and The Lilac Ship, Waikato Museum of Art & History 2002. Leach’s commissioned work My Blue Peninsula will open at Te Papa Tongarewa / Museum of New Zealand in November this year.
