Lonnie Hutchinson

Lonnie Hutchinson, Window Dressing...another way of telling, 2006, black builders paper
Venue: Museo de Arte Contemporáneo, de la Facultad de Artes, de la Universidad de Chile (MAC).
Lives and works in Auckland, New Zealand.
In investigating her dual cultural heritage, Lonnie Hutchinson's work slips easily between her Maori (Ngai Tahu) and Samoan identities – equally comfortable and fluent in both. Her art demonstrates the increasing fluidity of identity in today's art world and does so by eloquently integrating different media and cultural references. Hutchinson is typically described as a multi media and performance artist yet her recent installation work utilises the more ephemeral media of paper to create intricate ‘cut outs', making visual reference to traditional Samoan and Maori pattern motifs. The paper ‘cut outs' counter a sense of fragility, often equated with works on paper, through the large scale of the piece, making the work delicate and commanding.
Hutchinson has exhibited extensively in New Zealand and internationally. Recent exhibitions include: Pasifika Styles 2006, University of Cambridge Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology, England; PUBLIC/PRIVATE: Tumatanui/Tumataiti: the 2nd Auckland Triennial , 2004 Auckland Art Gallery Toi o Tamaki, Auckland; Telecom Prospect 2004, City Gallery Wellington; Purangiaho – Seeing Clearly at Auckland Art Gallery in 2001 and Whare , Art & Industry Urban Arts Biennial, SoFA Gallery, Christchurch.
