Dane Mitchell

Dane Mitchell, Present Surface of Tell, 2005

Venue: Museo de Arte Contemporáneo, de la Facultad de Artes, de la Universidad de Chile  (MAC)

b. 1976, Lives and works in Auckland, New Zealand

Dane Mitchell's work examines systems of knowledge and power, recognising that culture is a shifting system of exchange. Mitchell specifically addresses the networked system of museums, galleries and the extended art world. Using geographical, socio-political, archaeological and anthropological themes Dane attempts to illustrate how culture is constructed and defined by the ideological forces, conventions, modes of behaviour and customs that are seen as the status quo. Since gaining his Bachelor of Visual Arts from AIT (now AUT) in 1998, Dane has exhibited throughout New Zealand and internationally. Recent exhibitions include Local Transit - An Exhibition in Two Parts (2006), a joint exhibition between Artspace (Auckland) and Artists Space (New York); Linked: connectivity and exchange (2005) at the Govett Brewster Art Gallery (NZ); Remember New Zealand, Sao Paulo Biennal 2004 and the solo exhibition A GENTIL CARIOCA shown in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil .
