Brook Andrew is a conceptual artist who works in a variety of media including photography, screen print, video, neon, sound and installation. Reflections on identity, politics, language and consumerism play-out as a complex world-view for Brook Andrew, one that relies on multi-faceted positioning rather than conventional polarities. As he says ‘Our obsession/anxiety with artificial and popular constructs of Australian Indigenous and other cultures, celebrity, personality, war, supremacy, revolution and spiritual fulfilment are manifest through mass media/cultural activity, lighting up our lives with popular, mostly singular illusions and extrusions of something that is not always us/me’.
Andrew's work clearly evidences a disgust for the social inertia of a culture obsessed with consumption. His works challenge the ethics of indifference in the face of images (rather than experiences) of extreme inequality, racism, violence and the like. (B. French. 1999)
