What is South?
By turning South into a question rather than accepting it as a location, the South Project becomes a catalyst aiming to stimulate vibrancy in creative production and audience experience. South is not only a geographical region, a history, or a particular cultural identity, it also encapsulates/involves ideas, provocation and reflection. It acknowledges the southern hemisphere as the starting point but does not limit the concept of South exclusively to this region.
South seeks out spaces for creativity, challenging existing hierarchies and exploring diverse ways of collaborating and participating. It fosters networks of artists, cultural workers, audiences, intellectuals and south-south exchange aiming to encourage a multilateral and multidisciplinary set of international relationships across the south.
South-south cultural exchange has to date been realised through an international exchange program comprising multiple streams: gatherings, residencies, curated projects, education activities (South Kids), forums, publications, and a website, all supporting and sustaining a growing network of practitioners, participants and organisations across the south.
The South Project is the product of many different organisations coming together for the common purpose of strengthening lateral connections, stimulating experience and assisting understanding. The South Project acknowledges the dualism of north-south, however it provides an alternative view or perspective to this paradigm.
