Sounds of Colombia: featuring Aterciopelados

For the first time, Colombian music icons Aterciopelados bring their Grammy Award winning Latin rock to Australia.The hottest contemporary Latin electro-rock band from Colombia, mixing pop, funk and soul sounds to the vitality, excitement and energy of South American rhythms.

Aterciopelados (Ah-tair-see-oh-pel-ah-dos) is renowned for creating poetry on stage, fusing alternative rock with a variety of Colombian and Latin American musical traditions to create a unique rock sound that is exceptionally accessible. Fans from all cultural backgrounds resonate with the band’s impassioned, socially conscious signature organic rock sound in shows that feature their trademark songs of protest, life and humanity.

 

Support band Kimbaya revolves around the brand new musical collaboration between Melbourne based Colombian songbird, Rose Páez and pianist, Vashti Sivell. Together they entwine the sound of Latin American rhythms with jazz and contemporary sounds. Moving to Australia from Colombia in 2000, Rose Páez channels the diverse musical styles of her homeland whilst Vashti Sivell is a classically trained pianist who studied Jazz Piano and then passionately embraced Latin music. Kimbaya launched their first album in September of this year.

 

Be sure to arrive at 4pm, Hamer Hall’s foyers will be filled with Colombian Vibrations that will make you shake! Join DJ El Patron who will be spinning classic tunes from the 50s and 60s; dance with la Cumbiamba y la Cumbiambita; connect to Latin reggae band Son Corners and shake your bones with saca la Mois DJ with the Cumbia Cosmonauts, fresh from European tour. Get up close and get to know Melbourne based Colombian artists Patrick Rodriguez, Maria Pena, Claudia Escobar, Fernando Garcia Vasquez and Mauricio Rivera.

 

Listen to fun, spooky and colourful Colombian myths and legends. For lovers of art - Exciting visual arts with photography, painting, installations and the Valija Diplomatica, a miniature museum of Colombian art! Specialty stalls, workshops and Latin culinary treats to make your mouth water.

Come down to the Arts Centre and shake it up to Colombian sounds.
