Over the last three years, the South Project has connected with audiences and partners in Wellington (2005) and Santiago (2006), and Johannesburg (2007). Along the way, it has gathered supporters from the business sector, governments, those involved in the visual and performing and literary arts, universities, galleries and museums, and communities of audiences.

The project has developed a lively network of around 27,000 artists, makers, cultural workers and other interested parties across the south. Its rapid growth has seen an initial federal government seeding grant investment generate a turnover of more than ten times this amount. It has secured financial support from the New Zealand , Chilean, South African and Australian Governments, on a federal, regional and municipal level.

ABOUT SOUTH

South Initiatives 2004 – 2007
The South Project was initiated by Craft Victoria, Melbourne with funding from the Myer Foundation and the Commonwealth Government Visual Arts Craft Strategy, to pursue the developmental activity necessary to explore the new “south project” terrain proposed by the post-Melbourne Biennale conversations, and to forge local and international partnerships.

With Craft Victoria as ‘seed body', the South Project commenced in 2004 by initiating a program of residencies, kids program, annual international gatherings, publications and forums. Funding bodies, universities, organisations and arts workers and crafts people supported these activities. The South Project has encompassed a series of events designed to build a cultural highway that links countries of the south and facilitates creative traffic.
